Moved from the Midwest and lived in Ft. Lauderdale for a year, here's what I found:
Advantages:
+ tolle Restaurants
+sunny almost every day, even in june and july when it rains more, it can rain only 5 minutes
+ diverse population, especially as you approach Miami
+ there is so much more to do here, especially compared to the Midwest (unless snowboarding/skiing is your thing)
Opposites:
-many homeless. At busy traffic lights, there are often several people begging. They are not generally aggressive, but occasionally they are. A realtor told me that the county jail in downtown Ft. Lauderdale, and when people leave, they stay in Ft. Lauderdale. I've noticed that in some cities like Boca Raton it's the other way around - there are no homeless people there!
-Crime is high. We lived in a good area, Victoria Park, and every few months police helicopters would come out at night looking for a murder suspect.
-The driving here is terrible. Arrows are apparently optional, people make left turns on the far left lane, etc.

Fort Lauderdale is one of the best places to live. There are many job opportunities as it is more developed compared to other areas in Florida. This city also offers a very diverse community of people to interact with, allowing you to learn about and understand many different cultures. There are many excellent public schools in Fort Lauderdale and prestigious colleges such as Nova Southeastern University and Broward College. Also, there are so many fun things to do in the area including but not limited to nearby beaches, art exhibitions, a variety of great restaurants to dine at, annual events to attend and great nightlife! Overall it's family friendly and an exciting place to live, settle down and enjoy!

I moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL from Brooklyn, NY when I was 15 years old. As in most cities, there are good areas and not so good areas. The public schools in the neighborhood are, to be honest, overcrowded. I would not send my daughter to any of them. She attends a charter school. The nightlife is great, after all we are in South Florida so the nightlife is always busy! I would describe this city as very child-friendly. Most of the neighborhoods here are very closely connected. The city is very diverse and people from many different cultures live here. The actual market in Fort Lauderdale is currently a buyer's market. Here you can live very cheaply. Many people have moved here from Atlanta and NY due to the cheaper cost of living. I think Fort Lauderdale is a great place to raise a kid, which is why I'm still here 15 years later. I love that people in most neighborhoods are friendly and helpful.
